Luxury Business Card Printing Terms
Spot UV is a technique used to apply a glossy finish to certain portions of the business card. During this process, we print the business card design on a smooth card stock before we apply a clear gloss varnish on top in a predetermined pattern. The technique is best applied on matt laminated card stock so the surface is smooth and without texture. This creates a reflective shine that’s eye-catching and adds depth to the card finish against the matt card.
Triple Layer Spot UV Gloss is a special technique whereby several layers of spot uv gloss varnish are layered on top of each other to give a high build up of varnish, which portrays a embossed like effect. Triple Layer Spot UV Gloss work particularly well with Velvet Soft Touch Laminated card as the super matt card contrasts superbly with the super shiny rasised gloss effect.
With the foiling process, first we take your foiling artwork and create a metal block. This metal block will be used inconjuction with heat and pressure to impress the foil against the business card. A thin layer of metallic foil or pigment foil then attaches to the business card as per your artwork. Metallic gold and silver are the most popular colours for this finish but we can apply a variety of colours as well as gloss and matt foils. Foiling can be done on many types of materials like laminated business cards and uncoated stocks like the colorplan business cards.
The hot foiling process is similar to foiling. For this process, we create an art block of your chosen design and gently heat it. We then pick up the delicate foil with the heated block and press it against the business card stock. This ensures the foil adheres to the surface and doesn’t fade for a long time. The heat won’t damage the original card stock or warp the print so the results are vivid and bright.
Layered cards are more durable and can withstand frequent handling easily. They come in three forms; duplex, triplex, and quadplex cards and each have two, three, and four sheets bonded into one respectively. Multiple layers add thickness to the original card stocks and quadplex cards are quite stiff in comparison to other regular business cards. If you want something substantial and resilient, you should choose one of these luxury business card stocks.
The embossing process creates raised areas or patterns on the surface of the card stock, which gives it a textured, Three dimensional effect that’s both subtle and elegant. These details are created with pressure and specially designed plates. We slot the design plate into place and press it against the card stock. The pressure raises specific portion of the material and that creates the embossed effect on the business cards.
Debossing is the opposite of embossing. You get a recessed print area (pressed down) instead of a raised pattern and the printing process is similar. We use pressure and specially designed plates to create a subtle yet elegant design on the card surface. Like embossing, debossing can be combined with printing techniques like foil stamping, litho printing, and letterpress to create different unique business cards.
Letterpress is an age-old technique that creates classic block lettering and patterns on the card stock. During this process, we press the pattern of each colour against the card stock until the colour is firmly imprinted on the surface. The letters are slightly recessed, which gives the card a textured, dimensional look. We use thick but soft stock to ensure the impression of the letterpress isn’t visible on the back of the business card.
Edge foil or edge foiled business cards give a very luxurious and extravagant finish to the business cards. Edge foiling is a specialist technique of lining the edges of the business cards with standard or metallic foil. We can edge foil from 400gsm upwards but for best results 540gsm, 700gsm upwards is best.
Edge painting or edge painted business cards is where we physically paint the edges of the business cards. We use special pantone inks to brush over the edges. We can achieve and paint most colours including standard colour as well as metallics, however we do not guarntee a 100% match.
Full-colour printing or CMYK printing separates the digital image into four different colour values before transferring them in an order to the card stock. This process prints the most accurate colour representation so the resultant image is clear and vivid. The four colours, cyan, magenta, yellow, and key (black) combine to create a wide range of colours on print, which allows us to use multicoloured images on the business cards.
This process is ideal when you want to achieve accurate colour production everytime. Spot printing process uses ink in the colour of the original image unlike full-colour technique, which combines four different colours. For example, if you want a black card with yellow lettering, we would just use yellow in during the printing process instead of CMYK. This process limits our colour options but the results are more accurate and punchy colour reproduction.
Metallic printing, as the name suggests, uses metallic ink to print on to the business card. The metallic ink is made up of flakes which bond to the card when printed, when they bond they create that shiny brilliance that we all know. They are a whole range of metallic ink you can choose from. From your usual golds, silver, bronze to everyday colours tinted in metallic.
Matt lamination forms a seal on the card stock to protect the print and colour and this extends the business card’s life. It dulls any glossiness on the original card stock and creates a stark and flat smooth surface. Most finishes and prints will pop against such a background so Spot UV Gloss, Foiling and other such finishes look better against the matt background. The lamination technique also gives the card a contemporary look and feel.
Like matt lamination, this technique also forms a seal on the card surface and protects it from regular wear and tear. However, the finish has a velvety texture that feels very soft to touch. This gives the card a luxurious feel and subtle shimmery but super matt appearance. Printing techniques like Spot UV gloss and foiling look great on the velvet matt surface of this business card.
This refers to the paper or card weight, termed as gsm “grams per square meter” so the higher the gsm the thicker the card. For example our letterheads are around 180gsm, where as our spot uv gloss business cards are 450gsm and our colorplan cards are 700gsm but our super thick business cards are 1200gsm.
Card stock refers to the “card” material on whichisprinted up on. Card stock comes in different types, textures, and thickness including duplex, triplex, and quadplex level of thickness. Some printing techniques require good quality card stock to ensure best results. The stock is also available in a number of colours and textures. For example, Colorplan cards come in 50 different shades and have a distinctive feel and finish.
Coated paper comes with a glossy, matte, or textured coating while uncoated paper comes without any coating. Uncoated paper is more absorbent and can sometimes bleed. However, some printing techniques can only be used on uncoated card stock. Coated one is more resistant to wear and tear and can accept colours and prints easily. Some printing techniques require coated cards and won’t have the best results on uncoated ones.
Die cutting is the term used when cutting card stock into a specific shape with a steel cutting die. We can use this method to cut a card stock into a unique shape or punch out small designs in the card to give it a distinctive look. We can add rounded corners to your business card to make it stand out in a subtle manner. We use resilient and thick stock for this to ensure the cutting process doesn’t warp the card.
